Day 115 - Chasing Waterfalls, because dang it's hot!

March 10

We got our rental car in San Jose, said our good byes to Shelly and Roberto, and headed off for one last adventure.

We drove to Llanos de Cortes, a waterfall hidden down a dirt road (and now guarded as a national park, complete with admission fee).  Since it was Saturday, there were already lots of locals picnicking and swimming.  We took the chance to cool off a bit, watch the very serious lifeguard blow is whistle at any one having fun, then continued on.

We then headed to the place we planned on camping, named Sol Verde, hoping to get some info from the owner on whether or not we should fit in a hike at the volcano before the sunset.  The place were planning to stay had little camp tent/cabins, a small lodge, an open-air common area for breakfast, hammocks, and space for tents.  It was super well kept and just felt like a nice oasis.  But dang, it was HOT!

We asked his advice, and he told us to save the volcano for tomorrow as they don't let people hike after a certain hour, and head to a local swimming hole, a river with some falls approx 15 min walk away.

We followed his sketched out map to a part of the river that was super clear, teal water, and some short waterfalls.  It wasn't very deep, and there were already some locals swimming.  We enjoyed this relief from the heat, laid in the shade, stuck our feet in, went down the little falls like a water slide.

We headed back to setup camp and then headed to dinner at a little restaurant.  The town was tiny, so of the two restaurants available, we took the Dutch man's suggestion, and headed there early, as they often close when they have no customers.

The food was delicious and the owner was really great, excited to practice English with us (dang!).  We washed down our dinner with a lemon/mint juice and a pitaya juice, then headed home to play a board game until our eyes couldn't stay open any longer.  We agreed Rummikub was better with four people!
