Day 44 - Chocolate Hunt
December 29 - Bariloche, Argentina
We woke again to bad weather, light rain with promises of
more, and dark skies. The place we were
staying didn’t have any rooms available for the night, so we hung out until
lunch time to eat our leftovers, then headed out to another hostel, not before
Evan played a few more games of backgammon. The place we landed met our standards - we had a nice private room, the kitchen was clean, no outdoor space but that was not a problem with the coming rain. Lake view from our room!....
We had preparations to make, booking a way to Pampa Linda,
preparing camp food, booking a place to stay on our return (new years day - we were seeing not much availability on holidays). To make
these errands more enjoyable, we alternated with tasting something Bariloche is
known for – Chocolate!
Due to it's Swiss influence, there are so many chocolate shops in town, it is super overwhelming. The main drag is littered with fifty chocolate shops, all boasting about their chocolate being the best. I did a little research to find a few gems. We visited one covered in babushka dolls, called Mamuschka . Evan picked out some with his favorite - dulce de leche and I opted for more basic. Another we visited was less frequented as it was up hill a few blocks. The place was empty when we arrived. The chocolate man gave me free samples of his favorite - chocolate covered marzipan. We picked out some milk chocolate, some dark, and chocolate covered raisins. He gave us a sample on our way out the door, that was a chocolate to melt in your mouth, not to chew. It was amazing.
In continuation of our trend to break up there errands with fun, we also went to a few book stores, finding one with a wonderful collection of used and antique books. Based on recommendation from Evan’s backgammon buddy, we picked up a few easy readers in Spanish, to practice more.Due to it's Swiss influence, there are so many chocolate shops in town, it is super overwhelming. We made dinner at the hostel – rice and veggie salad. We took advantage of the TV and cable in our room and fell asleep watching the Godfather in Spanish....that movie is kind of violent!
