Day 42 - Hiking to Refugio Frey
December 27 - Bariloche, Argentina
We ate our fill, then packed up for a day hike to Refugio
Frey. I ran to a nearby panaderia for a few
croissants and bread for the hike. We
prepared ham, cheese, and avocado sandwiches as our fuel. The cool thing about
Bariloche is that you can reach many great hikes just on the local city buses. We hopped a bus, taking it approximately 30
minutes out of town, and got of at Lago Gutiérrez.
From there, we walked from town to the trailhead. The five hour trip up took us approximately
three hours. Along the way, we took a minor detail to the waterfalls. We arrived at the alpine lake and found a protected area from the wind to enjoy the sandwiches. There was a refugio there as well, with several people cooking or setting up tents. After soaking in the view and the sun, we
began the journey down, quickly setting pace with a guy hiking solo. We struck up conversation and found he was
geologist in Vancouver. We chatted the
whole way down, making plans to meet up for dinner later. When we got to the bottom, we walked to the bus stop through a small village that reminded us of Tahoe - beautiful cabins scattered in the woods with views of the lake and mountains. There were many Argentinians setting up for picnics, etc near the lake.
We woke to free breakfast at the hostel – REAL coffee, delicious homemade bread with dulce de leche and a
homemade jam, a cereal mixture, and mixed fruit.

After the crowded bus ride home, we cleaned up at the hostel and reunited with
the guy at a restaurant in the neighborhood.
We enjoyed local beers, some food, then ventured home to make a plan for
the next day (pausing for ice cream from a chocolate shop on the way home… SO
GOOD!)
