Day 41 - Argentina, We are back!
The morning after Christmas, we headed to catch a 8:30 AM bus from a random street corner. The bus was a double-decker bus, with some seats that laid all the way back (full cama) and some that laid partially back. We settled in for what was to take approx 7 hours. Approximately 3 hours in, we stopped a few miles from the Chile-Argentina border, everyone got off the bus, stood in line to stamp passports, and then reloaded the bus. For a reason unknown to everyone on the bus, we then sat for almost an hour, with no apparent reason. Then we continued on, shortly approaching the Argentina office, where we all got off the bus again, stamped our passports again, waited around outside, then reloaded the bus. We then continued on our way. The drive seemed especially long because we didn't plan through and did not prep any snacks. All we had were packaged cookies and snickers bars. The drive changed and we were then driving through the mountains, with lots of lakes and green. We rounded a large lake, Lago Nahuel Huapi, with Bariloche on the south side. We got off the bus and found our way to the hostel.
The hostel was on the tenth floor of a random unmarked building, which seemed odd until we arrived. The view was spectacular! ...and the rooms were nothing to write home about. We debated a short hike from town, but were pretty tired from our travels, so we opted to find food instead. After a spin through the supermarket (which was wiped clean probably from the holiday and not yet restocked), we opted for eating out. It was prime dinner time, Argentina-style, and every restaurant that looked good had a full entry way and long wait. We opted for empenadas from a shop nearby and brought them back to enjoy at the hostel. We dined with a couple from Malaysia. The conversation was lovely and the empanadas did not live up to our standards, but were still good.
