Day 17 - Baby hail to the face

November 30 - Los glaciares parque nacional, Argentina

Woke up at 3: 45 AM to hike to Lago de Los Tres for sunrise.  It was misting and cold when we left camp.  We were outfitted with our outer shells for wind/rain protection and head lamps.  The trail was strenuous, and the wind seemed to get worse as we got higher.  We arrived at the top before sunrise, then huddle behind a giant rock for wind protection.  It was hailing tiny baby hail and the wind was fierce.  Clouds were heavy so we couldn't even see Fitz Roy, right in front of us.

We were huddled together with a sleeping bag and blanket, pondering our next move.  We didn't have to ponder for very long before we decided to head town.  The clouds were too heavy for any good viewing today.  There were a few others at the top, contemplating a similar fate.  The trail back down was violently windy at some points, but the clouds were breaking over the valley and we were able to enjoy the colors of sunrise that way.
Since visibility was crappy and the wind was hollowing, there wasn't much point to doing any other hiking, so we retired to our tents at approximately 6 AM and caught some more Zzzs.  We woke and made lunch at noon.  The weather was clearing up, so we decided later in the afternoon to head back to Lago Sucio, and camp up there for the night.

We set up camp, enjoyed the view, and made a dinner of more pasta with tomato sauce (with olives and onions) and parmesan...and wine.... in attempts to eat our heaviest meals.
