Day 102 - Arriving in Santa Cruz

February 25 - Santa Cruz, Bolivia

We said good bye to our host in Sucre and our humble abode.  He drove us to a pick-up spot for "collectivos" to the airport.  The airport was almost an hour away.  We arrived, boarded the flight, and were in Santa Cruz in 45 minutes.  This bus ride would have included 12 to 16 hours of nausea-inducing, tailbone-breaking riding on a crowded bus, depending on the roads, and how many times the bus broke down.  The flight was easy!

From there, we hoped a bus to town, for about a buck a person.  Our hostel was easy to find, and when we arrived, we inquired about a day trip to the nearby national park for the following day.  The hostel was surprisingly no help at all.  I sent a few messages to some other companies for information and we decided to head out to find lunch.  The city was basically shutdown because it was Sunday, but we found a few places near the plaza that were open.  The city was large, pretty developed, and for some reason didn't feel all that welcoming.

We ate at a cafe that was attached to an art gallery.

We explored the plaza and a few other areas, and were confronted by a few locals that made us a little uncomfortable... we were suspicious of their motivations, feeling like targets walking around this city.  We headed back to the hostel to finalize a plan for the following day - intending to get out of town for the day.
