Day 81 - Llamas, alpacas, and pancakes

February 4 - Somewhere, Bolivia
We woke and ate a breakfast of pancakes.  Our group is notoriously slow, so I went llama spotting while we waited to leave.

We visited Siloly desert and the "world cup" rock.  We also stopped at Camel rock - see? it looks like a camel!

We went on to some more red rocks...I don't know the name.  We had fun climbing around.

We then visited Laguna altiplanica - the only other lake in this area (and this high) is Lake Titicaca, which is on the boarder of Bolivia and Peru.  The walk to the lake took us by a wetland, full of llamas grazing.  I loved walking alongside them (but they didn't really like me).  The grassy mounds formed by the pools of water were so beautiful.

I was walking too slow, so I got a piggy back ride.

The lake itself had the same green mounds surrounding it, along with some crazy rock formations.

We walked back with our driver, Mario, to the car.

The next area we drove to was surrounded by quinoa farms!

For lunch we stopped in a village and we had an interesting casserole of potatoes, cheese, and tiny slices of sausage.

We stopped in a town for a bit for a restroom break.  The sun was intense.  Evan and I bought popsicles off of a lady on the street, and some snacks, banana chips and roasted soy beans (we think).

We were supposed to stay in a hotel made of salt, so when we arrived in town and the guy dropped us at a hostel, we were pretty confused.  We found out later that apparently the road to the Salt Hotel was flooded.  We were back early, and had an hour or so until dinner, so walked the town a bit.  After dinner, we headed pretty much straight to bed, as our walk up call was 4 AM the next morning.  We had a room with four beds to ourselves as our roommates opted to pay more for a private bathroom.
