Day 98 - Labor Day and Protests

February 21 - Sucre, Bolivia

We continued on with our work / eat / spanish school routine.  On "labor day" in Bolivia, there were massive protests scheduled to shut the city down.  One year prior, the country had voted to not change the term limit for president, meaning the current president Evo could not run for another turn.  Somehow, the decision was changed in the supreme court, supported by Evo, and the term limit was changed.

In Sucre, the town revolted by peacefully blocking roads around town and closing stores.  The protesters reiterated "No means No", meaning, they country voted No, and meant No, the President could not run again.

The blockades made many streets impassable, which meant we made it to the school to volunteer, but had to walk back due to a simple "caution tape" blockade interrupting buses on the edge of town.

We kept in mind what Evan's Grandpa said...if you see protests with young people acting a bit wild, get out of there... but things stayed calm and all was well.
