Day 58 - Sactuario del Cañi

January 12 - Pucon, Chile

It was a cooler day, low 70s with some morning clouds.  We wanted to check out a hike at a reserve nearby, Sactuario del Cañi.  We caught the 10:30 AM local bus to the reserve.  It was about 45 minute trip to the park entrance.
At the entrance, we were greeted by a younger guy who oriented us to the park and collected the entrance fee (4,000 or approx $7).  In the early 90's, the area was about to be purchased by a logging company, when it was collaboratively purchased by private donors and set aside for conservation.

The hike was pretty steep - it took us about three hours to get to the top.  We stopped to eat our lunches at the refugio / camping area that was about halfway.  We were sitting on a log, near a tent that was pitched, then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a bear!  We quickly realized someone sleeping in the tent and snoring.

We got up to the top, and the clouds were blocking the volcano views. We had time before our bus back, so we waited a bit to see if it cleared - no luck.  Oh well!  It was still a really nice day.

The buses back were at 3, 5, 7 PM.   We had plenty of time to catch t he 5 PM bus so we were taking our time down, stopping and reading or chatting alongside waterfalls on the way down.  Then we realized we had taken a little too much time…we barely made it down to the park entrance a few minutes before 5, then saw the bus bolt by on the highway.  AAH!  We didn’t want to wait two more hours!  We ran to the highway to get within view and wave down the driver.  The driver was looking for us, and slowed the bus.  We hopped on and continued to town.

When we arrived, we fired up the grill for dinner and made steak, potatoes, and a little salad.  All was delicious!  Thanks, grillmaster, Evan!
